Come walk in the footsteps of a shepherd with this year long opportunity to get to know the sheep and have a closer connection to the cycle of shepherding. We start each cohort in the Spring when the lambs arrive and end the following year at the same time. Over the course of the year you will come to the farm on 7 different occasions which include: lambing, early spring pasture walk, midsummer celebration learning about fleece grading and skirting, late summer lamb evaluation and an afternoon of washing wool, fall herd evaluation, spring shearing day in 2027 and individual appointments for wool processing in 2027.
Each shepherd in training will have the opportunity to get to know the flock! Through out the season you will get to watch all the fleeces grow and the lambs progress through all of their growing stages. You will learn how to skirt wool, wash wool, grade fleeces, and how fleeces are processed in our mill. As a shepherd in training you will have the opportunity to step into our shoes and understand how we evaluate our flock throughout the seasons, the importance of feed and minerals, and the land that we nurture. The goal of the adventure is to have a deeper experience into the process of a garment from the beginning to the harvest of the fiber. What you will experience and create will last a lifetime. SO... Grab your farm clothes and come along with us as we prepare to spend a year with the sheep!
Sheep that we raise here on the property include: Fine Fleece Shetland, Icelandic (3 ewes), BFL Cross (2 ewes, 1 ram) Dairy Cross (2 ewes), Shetland/Cormo (4 ewes). Our lambs this season will have a cross of BFL/Shetland.
